VAGARA History

The Virginia Association of Government Archives & Records Administrators was established in 1984 by a group of individuals who were interested in exchanging information for the purpose of developing and implementing policies and standards, and promoting best practices in the fields of archives and records management.

Founders of VAGARA held their first official conference in 1985 with an estimated attendance of 88 members; since then, membership has grown to more than 250 individuals and vendors. Workshops and seminars have been conducted; annual conferences held with nationally recognized speakers; scholarships have been awarded for conference attendance and Special Interest Groups (SIGs) have been formed to identify and document best practices for use by its members.
